GET INVOLVED

  • Spay and neuter your kittens and cats: kittens as young as 2 months and who weigh 3 pounds can be safely spayed and neutered.
  • Pets get lost—keep current identification on your cat at all times and/or microchip your pet. Elastic collars are safest for cats.
  • The best chance that outdoor cats have is direct assistance from caring people in their communities—be a caregiver for homeless cats in your area and help make sure that the cats are spayed and neutered.
  • Help shelters and rescue organizations in your area: Contribute to a special program and donate as you can—supplies, money, and time.
  • Volunteer at a local shelter/rescue organization—they always can use extra hands.
  • Vote for the animals—support legislation that protects animals. Contact government officials about animal issues and urge them to be supportive of pro-animal legislation.
  • Work with a local feral cat group to help control your neighborhood’s feral and stray cat population.
  • Raise awareness and encourage action from others: Inform others about local shelters/organizations. In addition, inform them that the stray or feral cats in their yard are only attempting to survive, that many of them are abandoned pets, and that calling the humane society to trap the stray and feral cats is not the answer to stopping cat overpopulation. There are local groups who can help trap and alter the cats.
  • Report any case of animal cruelty to your local humane organization.
  • Contact your local shelter or rescue group and become a foster cat parent. There are many cats and kittens in need of a foster home.
  • Adopt: Open your heart and home to a new cat, or two.
  • Teach children how to care for animals with kindness and be a model by doing the same. Teach them that animals have feelings (they feel pain, fear, happiness, etc.) and that they show emotion—just in different ways than people do.
